Dueling Review: Hex Hex XL

Dueling Reviews: Thorn the Dragonborn and Bitzy the Bard discuss the fast-paced, curse casting card game Hex-Hex XL.

Background

This rapid-pace competitive card game is built on the idea of throwing hexes at other players like a hot potato. Hex Hex is a back-stabbing, take-that party game for 3-6 players that is simple and easy to learn. Players can counter curses and split curses played on them, directing them to other players.
The game is very thematic and has cards that perform unique actions such as switching hands and passing the curse in different directions. The winner of the game can define a rule that all players must follow in the next game.

Thorn the Dragonborn and Bitzy the Bard have played this game multiple times. Bitzy loved it in the past but something must have happened because she won’t play it now.

The duel is on!

TD: I had a lot of fun playing Hex Hex last night at the game party.
BB: Well, not me. I’m done with that.

TD: What? I thought you loved passing the hex tokens around and how fast you flip out cards.
BB: I did. But last night turned me off of it. Carl and Rose kept targeting me, so that my points dipped down below zero and that rule about talking got triggered.

TD: So?
BB: The whole reason I play board games is to socialize and play games with my friends. I want to talk and laugh and eat snacks. These rules stopped me from talking at all for most of the game.
I don’t mind knowing I’m going to lose a game but I do mind feeling controlled and told to “Shut up” by a game. It wrecked the experience for me. And that stupid part about defining new rules…

TD: Oh yeah. That was kind of silly.
BB: It was too arbitrary for me. I want to play games where gameplay is the issue, not everything else you do at the table.

TD: Well putting that aside for now, it’s always fun when you have to grab the wooden sticks.
BB: Thorn, didn’t you see the time when the sticks went flying and almost broke the light fixture over the table? My hands have scratches from someone’s fingernails as they tried to grab the same stick I did. I don’t need that.

TD: But we both played other times and I know you loved it.
BB: That’s why I’m torn, Thorn. I love the furious card play when you are desperate to avoid a curse and you’re down to your last few choices. It’s genius. And the card design and options are so clever.

TD: Then let’s make a few house rules that everyone has to agree to.
BB: I’m listening.

TD: We only play it without the kids and without the expansion with the sticks. No losing your voice if you dip below 0 and you can’t make rules about talking. Would that fix it for you?
BB: Yes! I’ll try it again.
