Why I Don’t Mind the Rain on Vacation

You packed up the kids, loaded all your suitcases in the car, and traveled across the country. But why does it always have to rain on vacation?

Tasty!

You packed up the kids, loaded all your suitcases in the car, and traveled across the country. But why does it always have to rain on vacation?

It rains to give you a chance to whip out the collection of small games you brought and save the day! All that really mattered was that you were spending time together.

These ten travel-sized games can be played on the hotel bed or a campground picnic table. Most card games would work for this collection, but the ones discussed below work especially well.

Travel Games

The Butterfly Garden (Set Collection) Collect cards with matching sets of butterflies to score points and win the game. A light card game with lovely artwork.

Hive (Abstract Strategy) Trap your opponent’s queen bee by surrounding it with other bugs. The tactile feel of the melamine pieces really adds to the experience.

Cribbage (Combination Card Game) Score points creating sets or combinations of 15. This classic game makes the list as it works so well on travel and uses a standard deck of cards. Use an app to keep score or use one of the many unique scoreboards available.

Qwixx (Dice Game) Roll colored dice, add them, and cross off corresponding numbers on your scoresheet. But be careful not to box yourself in and end up losing points.

Best Treehouse Ever (Card Drafting) The artwork on this fast and fun card game is what pulls you in. Who wouldn’t want to build a tree house complete with a laser tag room and a water slide?!

Kittens in a Blender (Take That) Move adorable kitten cards between the box, the counter, and the blender. Oh no! Don’t let your kitties get blended! Perfect game for dog-lovers.

Pass the Pigs (Dice Rolling) Roll the pig-shaped dice and see what combinations you get. How did they land? Did you get a snouter or a piggyback?

Diamonds (Trick Taking) Take tricks to move gems around the table and get points. Get the most gem tokens in your safe while stopping your opponents from doing the same.

Slamwich (Trick Taking) Double decker! Slap your hand down on the stack of sandwich ingredient cards when patterns show up. Our version came with a cute sandwich-shaped bag to hold the cards.

Hero Realms (Card Drafting/Elimination) Will you be the ranger this time? Collect a deck of cards you use to defeat your opponents and save the realm. Expansions are available to play this game cooperatively as well.
